Christmas Kick-Off: Handmade Gift List

Sunday, 31 August 2008 16:04 by sara

The Christmas preparations start today! At a minimum, it's time to get some ideas flowing.

Definitely on my list this year is the Fabric Dollhouse, by Lil'D a UK Lass in US.  Her blog is fantastic, and it's a great place to learn all sorts of crafty things, as well as English (UK) expressions that are fun to work into every day conversation.  Cream crackered is right now my favorite.

This gratitude wrap from Amanda (tutorial here) is also on my gift list. I'm thinking this would be a great gift for anyone who enjoys letter writing, including a younger child who is just learning the art of thank you notes.  It is a neat little wrap that holds letter-writing supplies, including stamps, in one little place. The idea is that you can keep it with you and write notes to loved ones as they come to mind. At least, that's what I'm thinking I would use it for.

And these...I'm thinking a great gift for the grandparents! Who wouldn't want little hands memorialized on their walls? You could do a whole family of hands. This idea is from Just a Girl, a great blog that I discovered via Today's Creative Blog.

Delayed again...

Wednesday, 6 August 2008 21:54 by sara

Sorry for the vanishing act. Serious back to school preparation is going on around here, including a last minute decision to change schools.  The new school begins next week (!!), which is two weeks earlier than our old school.  I'm having to cram three weeks of summer into one short week, which is proving to be exhausting.

Monday night was the Oldest Child's final karate class, in which she finally received her colored belt. She was thrilled. I managed to take two pictures before the camera battery died. It wasn't until an hour ago, when I decided to photograph the Criss Cross Coasters, that I realized I still hadn't charged the battery (um, missed photos of the final gymnastics class today, too).  Thus, no photos of the coasters just yet.  So, we'll delay Win-It Wednesday until Thursday, since you probably don't want to enter to win coasters sight unseen.

In other random news:

I've been eying the baked goods on Etsy for some time now.  This is a rather delicious looking Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie from The Wave Break. I'm a sucker for chocolate peanut butter anything. Like, Oberweis Ice Cream, or those brownies I made a little while back (see here).

This one has no peanut butter, but I also happen to love chocolate.  This Red Velvet Revolution cupcake from Bangerang Bake Shop actually comes in a jar.  The cupcake in a jar concept is one I've been wanting to try.

Aren't these cute?!  I made some back in December for my sister's baby shower, but didn't make enough to keep one for myself.  I'm thinking of ordering some from Etsy.

But the thought of buying food from random home bakers on Etsy sort of freaks me out. Has anyone tried it? Good? Bad? Poisoned?

A huge thank you to Tammy for this award! I'm extremely grateful to be recognized, and so happy to know that folks (well, Tammy at least!) are enjoying what I'm doing here.

I cannot simply accept the award, I must also follow these rules:

1) Put the logo on your blog.
2) Add a link to the person who awarded you.
3) Nominate at least 7 other blogs.
4) Add links to those blogs on yours.
5) Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs.

The nominees are (this could be a repeat award for some of these...I tried to make sure it wasn't, but hard to tell for sure):

Emily, the dabbler

Getting Stitched on the Farm

Misadventures of Mama and Jack

Everyday Chaos

SugarBug

Lazy Jane

Blessed Roots

Happy browsing!

Deadline looming...

Sunday, 6 July 2008 23:02 by sara

Aside from a brief break for Independence Day, the majority of my free time this weekend has been dedicated to meeting the Swap deadline.  Just as fatigue was setting in, and everyone in the house was swearing that I would never do another swap ever again, a wonderful thing happened:

My swap package arrived from Emily! I love, love, love my new placemats and napkins.  She used Amy Butler prints, and "bent the rules" by doing this great patchwork top. They are so fun.

She also somehow tapped in to my current obsession with all things Asian and included this fun candy from her local Asian market.  (Note: Emily is from Raytown, Mo.  I grew up very near Raytown, and I cannot imagine that it now has a "local" Asian market...Must check this out.)

I love that the napkins are all different prints, and it was so nice having breakfast this morning on our matching placemats.

This plate once contained Challah French Toast from the Contessa.  It just might be the very favorite breakfast around here.  Husband showed up from work on Thursday with flowers and Challah bread.  Subtle, no?

Receiving my swap package was just the boost I needed to get going on my placemats...and until my bobbin ran out, I thought I might actually get them finished tonight.  But I have a rule: If the bobbin runs out after 10 p.m., it is a sign that sewing should be finished for the evening. Because, frankly, it's all downhill from there.

Exciting Additions

Monday, 26 May 2008 14:40 by sara

Some very exciting developments over the weekend.  The first are the new flowers sprucing up the courtyard. The dahlias I love, because I'm a big fan of full, fluffy flowers.  The people at Lowes were unable to tell me whether these were perennials or annuals, and the tag didn't say either way. I've done a bit of research, and it seems it will depend on our zone. So they might be okay if I bring them inside for the winter. A random shopper at Lowes told me they'd be okay in the winter if I cut them down and put some mulch on them. So, we'll see.

In addition to the dahilas, we picked up some other annuals, two hibiscus trees, and another hanging basket , that I'm thinking I won't hang. All of which join the hydrangea I brought home lat week.   And while we're on the subject of flowers, you must meet the incredible growing rose:

This amazing rose lives by our trash cans, in a very unpretty part of our yard. The area is mostly mud and gets so much rain we had a drain installed a few years ago. This climbing rose is a unbelievable.  It was here when we moved in six years ago. We've done nothing to encourage it's growth, aside from throwing the long vine over the arbor that it grows near. Instead, it's almost like we've been trying to destroy it.  The whole area was dug up with a bobcat when they put in the drain, yet the rose still grows.  It gets a zillion flowers every summer. If I knew what it was, I'd buy thirty more and scatter them around my yard.

In other news, we finally spent our own stimulus check, for the sake of the economy, of course. I'm breaking into the world of digital SLR's, with the entry level Nikon D40.  I trust you noticed the photos in this post were much improved over previous editions. Expect more original photos from me in future, because I just can't stop clicking.

They love our flowers

Friday, 23 May 2008 20:22 by sara

Today we discovered another nest in our hanging flowers.  This one has several eggs, and I can't wait to see if they hatch. We were very careful not to touch the eggs, or even breathe on them, for fear that Mama Bird might not return. I did, however, water the plant before I knew the eggs were there. This plant hangs right next to our front door, so I imagine if the birds do hatch, it will be hard to miss the commotion. Well, I imagine there must be commotion when such things happen. I'm not really sure.

I love the colors on the eggs. I did a little search in an effort to identify the bird type, and discovered the speckling of eggs might actually make them stronger. Of course, I also learned some distrubing things about other birds. Initially, I thought a sparrow may have laid these eggs. However, sparrows apparently build "messy" nests, and this is no such thing. This nest, as you can see, is nearly perfectly cup-shaped.  Incidentally, I should be happy this is not a sparrow nest, as the sparrow is apparently a nasty little bird that attacks and kills other birds. Really? They seem pretty harmless.

Which lead me to worry that perhaps a cowbird has invaded another bird's nest.  That might explain why some of the eggs are heavily speckled (cowbird eggs) and others are nearly plain white (the nest-builder's eggs). Cowbirds are also mean little birds, apparently, often destroying eggs belonging to the other bird.  I've become very disillusioned with the whole bird world. I really thought they were happy, singing little creatures who lived in harmony with one another (with the exception of birds of prey, of course).

At the end of the day, I'm more confused than I started. I'm thinking I'll have to keep an eye out and see who lands and what, if anything, hatches.  If we have any bird folks reading, I'd welcome any thoughts on just what might be growing in those eggs.

Welcome the new Win-it Wednesday

Wednesday, 14 May 2008 14:43 by sara

Inspired as I was by last week's Throwback Thursday, I decided to make up a batch of Super Easy Keychains. Turns out they're so super easy that Cousin Kerry and I sewed up a ton.  Picking out the ribbon (half price at Hobby Lobby this week!) and the coordinating fabric (30% off!) was so fun that we got carried away and came home with enough supplies to make twenty thousand keychains.

These guys are still waiting for their hardware...we were so excited picking out the fabric and ribbon that we didn't come home with enough D Rings to make it all.

An assortment of the finished keychains. Sixteen were completed in all, with about fourteen more waiting for hardware.

Of course, Kerry and I took first pick of the batch--each coordinated to match our new purse fabric we also bought.  What on Earth will we do with all of these keychains, you ask?  Some will be sold at Cousin Kerry's upcoming garage sale ($4 each, place your order now), and one will be given away to a lucky blog reader. That's right...Welcome to Win-It Wednesday!

Leave a comment on any post between now and next Wednesday and you will be entered into a drawing to win a keychain.
