Ribbons, buttons and bands...oh my

In the brief history of my sewing career, I've not been a big fan of buttons. I pretty much avoid any garment that requires them, mostly because I've not wanted to deal with making a corresponding buttonhole.  I understand the machine is supposed to make buttonholing relatively simple, but I've read the manual and apparently it involves finding a buttonhole foot (somewhere in the box of accessories) and then following a series of steps.  I don't much care for having to follow steps while trying to run the machine. Thus, I've avoided buttons.

I'm sure buttons can be used generally as just an accent. I think I've seen it done. But, again, I've not really had an opportunity to embellish with buttons, either. Mostly I think I'm afraid my garment will come out looking like some bad Golden Girls episode.  I seem to remember a lot of button embellishment in the 80's, and I don't want to resurrect those demons.

Nonetheless, I've found these fabric covered buttons (up till now I thought that was a really bad idea...fabric covered buttons?!) on Etsy.

I wasn't looking for fabric covered buttons. We had a mini-craft fair this week, where a woman was selling belts made of ribbon. I thought the price was a little crazy. So I thought I'd check out similar stuff online.

That got boring pretty quickly, especially when I discovered I could buy fabric remnants on Etsy.  The fabric remnants lead me to Heatherknitz's Shop.  In addition to fabric remnants (basically remnants leftover from her purses and hair thingy projects), she sells fabric covered buttons.

While I like the matching ones, I also think the coordinating ones are fun, too.

Elephants and the circus!

And while I'm not ready for buttons, I do think I might order some hair bands.  In fact, my timing is perfect, as just this morning our oldest was asking for rubber bands with "balls" on them, like her friend has.  These are better than plain plastic balls.

Heather even sells a pdf tutorial so you can learn to make all of this yourself, which would be particularly good if you think you might get addicted to these pretty little buttons.

And lest we forget what I was doing there in the first place, Heatherknitz does sell quite a bit of ribbon.  Perfect for making overpriced ribbon belts.
